Although the court battle against the worldwide OneCoin Ponzi scheme is still ongoing, a movie about it is currently in development with an iconic lead actress.
According to Deadline, Kate Winslet has agreed to take the role and produce “Fake!”, a movie that is based around an unpublished book by authors Jake McAdam and Douglas Thompson. McAdams, who is also a victim of the OneCoin scheme, will participate in the creation of the film.
The screenwriter of the film, and director, will be Scott Z. Burns who also directed The Report, a political drama film revolving around the CIA’s torture practices after 9/11. He also wrote the pandemic movie Contagion, released in 2011, which also featured Winslet.
The OneCoin Ponzi started out in 2014 by the Bulgarian national Ruja Ignatova. It had a multilevel marketing scheme structure but applied in the cryptocurrency field. OneCoin was presented as the next Bitcoin, although it was never backed by any blockchain or a network. Many users were careless about the warnings of numerous crypto insiders and government agencies about the scheme, that fostered “we against them” mentality.
After the scheme collapsed McAdam started a social support group for OneCoin victims. She and her family lost 250,000 euros before she realized, she has been fooled.
Ignatova was charged with fraud but disappeared without a trace in 2017. Her brother, Konstantin Ignatov, who was also working on OneCoin, faced the same charges in March this year.
