IBM Launching Blockchain ‘Health Pass’ to Aid Return to Public Spaces

The tech giant IBM is launching a system that verifies a person’s health condition by using blockchain-based technology. The move is designed to contribute to the individuals’ safe return to public spaces like work, travel, school, sports events etc.

IBM Watson Health, a company working in the data, analytics, and technology field within the health industry issued a statement on Monday that it created the Digital Health Pass. It will represent a solution for organizations that seek to establish their own criteria about the health verifications amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

These criteria might include, for example, test results and temperature scans that are generated for an individual’s Digital Health Pass, being recorded and shared through the blockchain network of IBM.

Paul Roma, who is a general manager at the subsidiary company, stated that organizations are actively looking for solutions to help return their employees to public spaces, while also protect their private information. The new digital solution to this problem will utilize “sophisticated cryptographic methods” to verify one’s health status while safeguarding the data from becoming public.

According to the website of the project, users can manage their health information through an encrypted wallet app for smartphones. They are also able to upload relevant health results, for example, COVID-19 test results, by simply scanning a QR code, which allows parties with access to the user’s data to review it.
