Wikipedia On its Way to Create History
Wikipedia celebrated its 20th anniversary in January 2020. Although, that’s not the only historical event passing through free Internet Encyclopedia Wikipedia. The free internet encyclopedia platform has made another historical event by making the sale of its very first non-fungible token through an auction performed at Christie’s.
On 15th Dec, an auction was completed on Christie’s that aimed at selling two Wikipedia concerned objects acquired directly via the co-founder of Wikipedia, JimmyWales. The auction was named “the Birth of Wikipedia” that included the sale of two lots. It includes Wikipedia’s NFT first edit that made a sale of $750,000 and the second one includes a Strawberry iMac taken into work by Wales to create Wikipedia at the price of $187,500.
Featuring the NFT Lot
The NFT lot incorporates the very first message shared on Wikipedia after its launch in 2001. NFT lot features a unique instance in the internet’s history when Wales posted the words “Hello World!” after completing the launch of the Wikipedia site on 15th January 2001.
The NFT holds the authentic layout of the Wikipedia homepage as shown in 2001 using the initial surviving codes. NFT included a feature that enables the users to make edits to the page. This feature can be reset using a timer to revert to its original condition.
The Auction
The Senior Specialist at Christie’s, Peter Klarnet, made a statement regarding the results of the auction. It said that auction has triggered the growing interest of people in the history of the internet. As per the auction house, Wikipedia would take partial sale proceeds to back the alternative social media network of Wales pilot project called “WT.Social”.
