A New Partnership Established Between Laos and Soramitsu for Research on CBDC

The government of Laos has come up with a partnership scheme alongside Soramitsu over CBDC research. The latter firm had helped in establishing Cambodia’s Bakong virtual payment mechanism.

Laos is the recent country to have begun the exploration of the Central Bank Digital Currency or CBDC. The announcement on this subject’s research was made alongside the DLT company Soramitsu, a Japanese firm.

As per the Nikkei Asia report from 3rd October, the project launch is expected in this month itself. Followed up by an agreement on a memorandum for understanding in Somaritsu and Laos banks to study the CBDC.

The study is mainly focused on the assessment of bank operations and the financial system. In addition to that, the assessment of public transactional needs in Laos would be done.

The CBDC research is expected to offer better policies on the economy and paving a way for international CBDC related investments. It implies that China, the second-largest business partner, would exchange trades based on CBDC.

Soramitsu had earlier worked with Cambodia in developing their digital system for payment. The app has been installed by more than 2 lakh users since its availability.

The decision of the government of Laos to conduct CBDC research has a great future perspective. It can push the digital payment mechanisms and lead to the exploration for better and regulated digital systems.

On 11th September, the government officially issued a pilot project to explore the mining of cryptocurrency and its trading. Around six major companies that include banks and civil construction firms have been given permission to conduct mining on crypto assets. It is a minor part of the CBDC project.

Many government ministries have started to ponder upon the partnership between the Laos bank and Soramitsu. They have been working on preparing regulations to govern the usage of digital assets.

On the other hand, the central bank of the country has issued a legal notice warning the common public about the risks related to crypto asset dysregulation.
