South Korea is Moving Towards Digitalization of IDs Based on the Blockchain

According to Fn News, soon the inhabitants of the South Korea will completely reject the plastic ID cards, the card for social benefits, and driving licenses in favor of digital alternatives, based on the blockchain technology. The largest companies in the country are already fighting for share in this market.

The three largest mobile operators in the country SK Telecom, KT and LG U + agreed on the transaction, in the framework of which they will use a mobile platform for the identification of driver’s license PASS, developed by the National Police Agency and Control of the Movement

The police declare that 1.4 million South Koreans have already started using the PASS platform, which allows them to confirm their identity with the help of a blockchain and QR codes.

The CU and GS25 round-the-clock chain stores have already started adopting the PASS application as a method of age verification across the country. Last week, the Internet giant Naver and the operator of the chat-applications Kakao also adapted to the platform, having received “a temporary permission” in accordance with the legislative rules.

However, the PASS application is just the tip of the iceberg, while the media predicts an upcoming “war of mobile identifications based on blockchain”, that will be waged by the largest technology companies in the country.

Likewise, the South Korean companies are confident that in the next few months the implementation of personal confirmation by blockchain tech and the storage of digital documents will be fast enough.

At the beginning of this year, Naver, Kakao, as well as the manufacturer of Samsung mobile devices received permission to work on their own ideas for IDs based on blockchain. In an effort to capture the market, all three companies began to work with private sector firms, state organizations, and universities.

It is expected that this year they will present their own solutions:

Samsung will work on a platform for obtaining driving rights, Kakao creates solutions for the digitalization of university diplomas, and Naver is concentrated on means for business communication.

A number of commercial banks are also actively developing business directions on the use of ID based on the blockchain.
