Twitch Offers Discount for Users Paying with Bitcoin

The world-renowned streaming platform Twitch, which is owned by Amazon, is now offering a discount on subscriptions for users who decide to pay in cryptocurrency using BitPay.

This made Twitch the first major company to issue a promotion based on crypto out of all the companies and merchants the payment processor BitPay works with. Furthermore, the 10% subscription discount is covered by Twitch, and not by BitPay, as Marketing Manager at the payment company, Bill Zielke revealed.

This, however, is not the first instance in which Twitch started a relationship with cryptocurrencies. In March 2019, the company removed previously available Bitcoin payment options and canceled subscriptions based on recurring crypto payments. In it important to note that this period lasted for only three months before the previous options were reinstated. The causes of the situation however remain unclear.

Some observers speculate that the development of blockchain-based games can be the reason for the growing interest of the platform in cryptocurrencies. Twitch is primarily popular with games and thus this seems a plausible explanation of their move. Statistics show that last month there were 16,000 different games played on the streaming platform.

Blockchain-based and technologies, as well as cryptocurrencies, are growing in popularity in the gaming communities, where they are valued for their anonymity, resilience, and integrity.
