The American city of Miami is about to incorporate Bitcoin as a method of payment. The Miami City Commission voted to endorse the initiative of Mayor Francis Suarez and accept Bitcoin to be used for paying salaries, taxes, and other fees.
The city also supports the idea of utilizing Bitcoin to boost the city’s budget. Suarez spoke about the achievement of the city on his official Twitter account. On video, he explained that the adopted resolution allows civil servants to receive all or part of their salaries in the most popular cryptocurrency and enables residents to pay taxes and fees in Bitcoins.
“It’s amazing to be a very developed city in terms of cryptocurrency use,” concluded Mayor Suarez, once again expressing gratitude to his “colleagues on the commission” for supporting his idea.
“Miami City Hall may start to conduct some of its payments in Bitcoin,” the local newspaper Miami Herald wrote, adding that the municipality plans to carry out awareness initiatives in English, Spanish, and Creole to enlighten residents about the cryptocurrency.
The crypto community welcomed the initiative of Mayor Suarez with enthusiasm. Twitter users write: “This is particularly important for Bitcoin”; “Mayors of other cities should consider following Mr. Suarez’s initiative and investing part of the city’s coffers in Bitcoin!”
