Etherisc has released a project that aligns with insurance cover given to around 6000 farmers for perished crops during climatic adversities. The company has entered into an insurance collaboration with a microinsurance issuer called ACRE and decentralized protocol network, Etherisc. They have enabled some thousands of farmers from Kenya to get insurance for weather concerning risks.

The Onset of the Project

ACRE Africa and Etherisc have indicated the processing of insurance payouts for several over 17000 farmers, working at a small scale, in Kenya with this collaboration. The project is been funded by the Ethereum Foundation, the Chainlink Community Grant along with Decentralized Insurance Foundation. The project was initially made public in November 2020.

The chief inclusive officer of Etherisc, Michiel Berende, showed his excitement about the initiative. He stated that finally, some of their efforts have started to take shape of fruits. The project has begun to take a tangible form while offering social assistance to the Kenyan farmers, who are prone to adverse impacts of climatic change. He also added that offered solutions in collaboration with ACRE Africa are intended to resolve a variety of challenges concerned with conventional crop insurances including limited transparency, delayed transactions and extreme premium costs.

The Implications of Initiative

One of the major implications of the initiative is that smallholder farmers will need to pay as low as $0.50 for premiums to get the coverage. As the country has been going through several cases of floods and droughts affecting livelihoods, such an initiative seems quite useful. Both ACRE Africa and Etherisc are planning to reach 2,50,000 farmers in the entire East Africa region, the farmers, who are already getting coverage are paid through a complete solution from the blockchain.
