A crypto trader named Domenic Lacovone suffered a loss of $650,000 in just 2 seconds due to a scam. His iCloud account got hacked, and the sum was instantly withdrawn. The whole case was shared on Twitter by the victim himself. He wrote that he got a phone call that was legitimately from Apple. Initially, he was also apprehensive about the call. But later, he trusted when he saw apple’s number. So he called back the number. The person on the phone call asked to tell him the code sent to his phone. As he told the code, in just a matter of 2 seconds, his MetaMask account was vacant.
He didn’t know that there was a seed phrase saved in his iCloud. It is 12 digit code saved from the iPhone into the iCloud space. After knowing the code, the hackers got to know the seed phrase. It is a crucial digit sequence required to access the crypto wallet. So it shouldn’t be given to another person.
How can you avoid such mishaps?
Now the question arises can it happen to you? The answer is Yes! However, you can make sure to prevent such issues by taking specific safety measures like;
- Don’t save your password or wallet code on the phone. A hacker can easily access your phone and can steal this code.
- It is crucial to be aware of some general functions. Like no company sends such codes and tells you to change your password. Any person indicating such a scenario is a red flag for such scams.
- Don’t take back up your investment or money management apps. Turn off the backup settings. You can do it by going to settings and then profile. There you will see the icon of iCloud; select it. Then, choose to manage storage and change the backup settings.
