The European Central Bank has issued an application for the registration of the trademark for the digital euro, Bloomberg informed.
According to the publication, ECB lawyers associated with the German law firm Bock Legal filed the application with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) in the second half of September. It has not been approved yet.
The move suggests that the regulator is still positive about the outlook for central bank digital currencies (CBDC). Despite this, the bank has not yet made a conclusive decision on the issue of the digital euro. At present, a report is being prepared for publication, the reaction to which will determine the further vector of work in this direction. Earlier, ECB head Christine Lagarde stated:
“The Eurozone has not yet decided on the introduction of the digital euro, but like some other central banks in the world, we are studying the benefits, risks, and functional challenges of this process. It is expected that the results of the work of the working group will be presented to the public in the coming weeks, after which a public discussion will begin. ”
Lagarde also made a clarification that the digital euro should be complementing the existing fiat currency, not replacing it.
